Why Arc Flash Awareness Should Extend Beyond Electricians

When discussing electrical safety is typically linked to electrical professionals such as electricians and electrical maintenance services, and the risk of arc flash is normally with them. Though these are the individuals who are most likely to get direct exposure to arc flash, the lack of awareness among only electricians can lead to serious safety gaps within an organization. In many workplace situations, workers from different departments are in close proximity to electrical equipment or in areas that contain electrical systems. As such, arc flash awareness should be a part of safety training for a much wider group of workers.

An in-depth knowledge of arc flash hazards throughout the workforce offers a way to minimize accidents, enhance emergency response, and reinforce an overall safety culture within an organization.

Knowing what an Arc Flash Hazard is.

An Arc Flash is an electrical event that can result from an electrical fault and cause a sudden release of energy through the air between conductors or between a conductor and ground. The event can produce very high temperatures, strong light, pressure waves and molten metal particles in an incredibly short period of time.

Electricians might work with energized equipment, but other workers may be working in facilities that have electrical panels, switchgear, transformers and control systems. If not, these individuals may unwittingly put themselves at risk.

Non-Electrical Personnel has access to Electrical Areas

Supervisors, engineers, machine operators, inspectors, housekeeping and contractors must have access to areas where electrical equipment is located in many facilities. They may not do electric work but they could be impacted by an arc flash if it happens nearby.

The arc flash awareness training enables these employees to identify warning labels, understand restricted approach boundaries and value the need to keep safe distances away from energized equipment.

This course will help enhance the workplace safety culture.

The highest level of safety is achieved when it is fostered throughout the organization. If only electricians are aware of Arc Flash, other workers may minimize the risk of electric shock.

Spread the arc flash awareness program throughout all employees involved will lead to a proactive approach to hazard identification and reporting. Staff are more likely to notice hazardous situations, report on broken equipment and adhere to safety protocols.

It’s easier for a workplace to prevent an incident before it happens if everyone understands the possible consequences of an Arc Flash incident.

Supporting Emergency Preparedness

The response to an Arc Flash incident has the potential to have a strong impact on the event’s outcome. Staff that is aware of the characteristics of arc flash hazards will be more likely to take the proper action in an emergency.

Training to raise awareness can help workers identify signs of an electrical incident, know what to do in case of an evacuation, be aware of secondary hazards, and relay important information to emergency responders. This readiness may help to prepare for a more effective and coordinated response.

Improving the safety of Contractors and Visitors

Contractors, vendors and temporary employees are often used at industrial and commercial facilities and may not know how to handle the electrical hazards in these facilities. Basic Arc Flash awareness contributes to the safety of everyone who enters the workplace as they will be aware of the hazards of electrical equipment.

Unsafe behaviors can be minimized and facility safety requirements can be better met by even a short awareness program.

Supporting Regulatory Compliance

Hazard communication and employee awareness are a focus of many workplace safety standards. More detailed technical training may be necessary for qualified electrical workers, but more general arc flash awareness helps with compliance by educating all personnel who could be impacted by arc flash events on what they are and how to protect themselves.

A company with a thorough training initiative is likely to be more dedicated to safety and risk management in the workplace.

Conclusion

Electricians are not the only ones who are susceptible to arc flash hazards. Other employees, such as supervisors, operators, maintenance workers, contractors and others may also work in environments where electrical risks are present. With proper training regarding arc flash across all employees, you will be able to achieve many goals like identifying hazards, improving the safety culture within the company, preparing for emergencies, and preventing any accidents from happening within your workplace. When all the members in the company know about arc flashes and its dangers, everybody will be safe.
